Features: This book is divided into 11 parts. The first 6 parts introduce the basics of microbiology: the development of microbiology, the structure of microorganisms, microbial growth and its control, metabolism, molecular biology, genetics, DNA technology, genomics, and the characteristics of viruses. Part VII provides an overview of the microbial world. In the 5th edition of this book, the overview of bacteria is strictly structured according to the overall arrangement of the upcoming 2nd edition of The Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. Although the focus is on bacteria, eukaryotic microorganisms are also given appropriate attention. Fungi, algae, and protozoa are important in their own right, and the introduction to their biology in Chapters 25-27 is necessary for understanding various topics in clinical medicine and microbial ecology. Part VIII focuses on the relationship between microorganisms and other organisms and the environment (microbial ecology), and also introduces aquatic and terrestrial microbiology. To avoid excessive length in the chapters on aquatic and terrestrial habitats, their general principles are introduced in Chapter 28 under Microbial Ecology and Environmental Microbiology, which also describes various types of microbial interactions, such as mutualism, primary cooperation, commensalism, and predation in the environment. Parts IX and X deal with pathogenicity, resistance, and disease. Part IX consists of 3 chapters describing the normal microbiota, nonspecific host resistance, the main aspects of immune responses, and medical microbiology. Part X first discusses essential topics such as the pathogenicity of microorganisms, antimicrobial chemotherapy, and epidemiology, and then Chapters 38-40 summarize the major human microbial diseases. The overview of diseases is organized on a chapter-by-chapter basis, with the diseases discussed in each chapter classified according to their mode of transmission. This approach provides flexibility, making it easy for students to access information on any disease of interest. This overview is not simply a list of diseases but is introduced because of their medical importance and their ability to illustrate the basic principles of disease and resistance. Part XI concludes this textbook by introducing food and industrial microbiology. Five appendices are provided to help students review basic chemical concepts and gain additional information on important topics not fully covered in the book.
