What are the causes of balanitis?

Patient's question:

Recently, there has been inflammation in the glans, and the area where the glans meets the foreskin has been itchy for three or four days. I don't know why, and I don't know what's going on. So, I went to the hospital for a thorough examination. The doctor told me that I have balanoposthitis. What are the causes of balanoposthitis?

Doctor's answer:

Often due to excessive foreskin, smegma, when local hygiene is not paid attention to, accumulates in the foreskin and bacterial infection leads to the onset of the disease. In the early stages of the disease, mild cases may only show redness of the glans and inner foreskin, accompanied by itching. Severe cases may experience pain and tenderness again; in the later stages, superficial ulcers may recur in the foreskin, with or without creamy discharge, often accompanied by a foul odor; significant local redness and swelling can affect urination and cause dysuria.
