Features: The numerical solution of partial differential equations is of great significance to the development of many technologies, and finding the numerical solution of partial differential equations has become a goal of the development of parallel computer hardware and software. The significant improvement in the performance of parallel computers has made problems that were previously difficult to handle solvable through conventional computing. From June 9 to 13, 1997, IMA held a special academic symposium on the parallel solution of partial differential equations. The papers in this volume are based on the presentations made at the symposium, primarily focusing on new approximation methods and the development and review of solution techniques that can utilize parallel computers. The topics covered in this book mainly include domain decomposition methods, parallel multigrid methods, forward tracking methods, sparse matrix techniques, adaptive methods, virtual domain methods, and temporal and spatial discretization methods. The book also discusses the applications of various methods in fluid dynamics, radiative transfer, solid mechanics, and semiconductor simulation, respectively.
