Features: To implement the spirit of the New Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education promulgated by the Teaching Guidance Committee for Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education in March 2000, and to cultivate globally-minded English professionals, we have organized the compilation of this English Reading Course. The 21st Century English Major Reading Course includes the majority of its articles from newly published domestic and international newspapers and magazines, covering a wide range of topics such as society, politics, economy, culture, language, science and technology, and trade. During the compilation process, the textbook strives to ensure that the language knowledge is up-to-date, the selected materials are refined, and the background knowledge is rich, highlighting the academic and practical nature of the articles. In addition to passages covering general literature, language, and daily life, we have also selected some practical articles closely related to modern technology and trade, such as a special excerpt about the IT industry representative Yahoo and an introduction to the application of search engines. This allows readers not only to improve their language application skills and develop a good sense of language but also to stay updated on the latest technological information, broadening their knowledge and horizons. The textbook not only provides abundant reading materials but also introduces main reading skills progressively between every five units to help students master and flexibly apply the learned techniques, thereby improving their overall reading proficiency. Additionally, the textbook is interspersed with many interesting illustrations and rationally adjusts the layout of the articles, making it refreshing to read. The entire book is divided into two volumes, with each volume containing 20 units. Each unit consists of two main reading texts and three rapid reading texts, totaling approximately 200 articles. After each main reading text in the unit, there are various exercises including vocabulary, reading comprehension, and judgment, with flexible formats that closely align with the reading techniques taught in the book. This course is suitable for the reading courses of English majors in their first and second years and can also serve as supplementary reading material for senior non-English majors.
