Features: Chinese landscape painting has a history of approximately 1,500 years. Its unique national style and artistic charm have had a significant impact on Eastern painting art and hold a vital position in the history of our national painting. The emergence of landscape painting is the result of our ancestors discovering natural beauty and expressing it artistically during the process of creating civilization, reflecting the progress of civilization. Humans come from nature, live, are nurtured, and develop within it, and ultimately return to nature. The vastness and endless vitality of nature are infinite from a finite human perspective. Therefore, in the course of understanding nature, humans have expanded and developed wisdom and civilization, and through continuous recognition, development, and inspiration, they have glorified and enriched the pursuit and consciousness of life and creation. Nature cultivates people's temperament and broadens their horizons. This close relationship between humans and nature is deeply intertwined. Thus, in China, the expression of natural beauty is the embodiment of people's emotions and the expression of the artistic conception they gain from their understanding of nature, combined with appropriate painting forms. This is the great artistic feature of Chinese landscape painting. Based on this, Chinese landscape painting has never aimed to merely reproduce objective nature or present pure subjective formal beauty. This is the first point that needs to be clearly understood about the artistic nature of traditional Chinese landscape painting. At the same time, due to the progress of human civilization, the development of understanding, and the richness of individual emotions, people's experiences and insights in the vast world are multifaceted. In terms of artistic expression, landscape painting is divided into three categories: meticulous brushwork, combined meticulous and freehand brushwork, and bold freehand brushwork. Each category is further divided into ink and wash, light color, and heavy color, forming nine forms of landscape painting expression. This book introduces the combined meticulous and freehand brushwork with light color, which is traditionally known as "Shan Jiao Landscape." It was pioneered by the Yuan dynasty, with its artistic style inheriting the Five Dynasties and Northern Song periods while opening the way for the Ming and Qing dynasties, making it relatively more representative. The technical system involved covers fundamental knowledge and basic techniques that are highly systematic and comprehensive, making it the main learning content in teaching. Most current landscape painting technique books explain the techniques of this combined meticulous and freehand brushwork with light color form. Through these techniques, students master the fundamentals, which allows them to directly enter the realm of personal creation on one hand, and also creates conditions for more systematically and deeply exploring traditional meticulous brushwork, freehand brushwork, or ink and heavy color fields on the other. This provides a foundation for the individual development of learners while leaving room for further growth. This book, "Techniques of Chinese Landscape Painting," is compiled according to the requirements of the landscape painting teaching syllabus and is divided into four parts. The first part is an overview, focusing on the common knowledge of the development of traditional techniques, which is more beneficial for learning techniques. The remaining three parts describe the techniques, organized into chapters based on a teaching structure of copying, sketching from life, and creation, forming a tripartite system. The purpose is to enable beginners to systematically grasp the basic expressive principles of this traditional painting art and to develop a preliminary aesthetic and expressive ability in landscape painting.
