Features: The significant characteristic of management disciplines is their practicality. Management is something that needs to be learned through practice, which is why management students often complain about "not learning anything" or "studying only empty theories." This is because they are exposed only to management theory and lack a practical understanding of real-world situations. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, it is essential to conduct case studies, as they provide a connection between theory and reality. For this reason, MBA programs place particular emphasis on cultivating students' practical skills, requiring them to complete numerous case studies in their courses. At the renowned Harvard Business School in the United States, MBA students are expected to complete approximately 800 case studies over two and a half years, averaging one per day. Each case study is equivalent to an additional opportunity to engage with business managers and think critically about management issues and decisions, which in turn helps to foster transferable skills and broaden perspectives for future practical work.
When faced with a case study, students often feel overwhelmed. Here are two recommended approaches to tackle them:
(1) For problem-orientation case studies, where both problems and solutions are provided, you need to evaluate them through discussion and analysis.
(2) For analysis-decision case studies, where solutions are not provided, you need to make decisions.
A well-designed teaching case does not offer a "correct answer" to the problems it raises, a "definitive" method for analyzing a situation, or a single "best approach." Instead, it presents students with conflicts, issues, choices, and information, encouraging them to identify problems, develop solutions, and propose action plans using the case material. Most of the cases in this book fall into the first category mentioned above.
