Features: College English is a comprehensive practical course textbook designed for English majors at higher education institutions in the foundational stage. It helps improve students' listening, speaking, reading, writing, and self-learning abilities. After studying this textbook, combined with specific training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students should possess the following skills upon entering higher grades:
1. Ability to read general English and reference books in English;
2. Ability to understand knowledge-based courses taught in English;
3. Ability to participate in classroom discussions in English with basic linguistic accuracy;
4. Ability to write book reports in English with basic linguistic accuracy.
College English is divided into four volumes. This is the third volume. Volume 1 contains fifteen lessons, Volume 2 contains eleven lessons, and Volumes 3 and 4 each contain fifteen lessons. Shorter texts are taught one per week, while longer texts can be adjusted by the instructor. Each lesson includes a text, notes, and exercises. Volumes 1 and 2 also include a vocabulary list and supplementary reading. They are explained as follows:
Text: To expose students to authentic English from the beginning, all texts are selected from original works by English and American authors. We have made only minor revisions to a few texts based on teaching needs. In terms of content selection, we have strived to ensure diversity, knowledge, and interest.
Vocabulary List: Considering that students need time to adapt to university-level learning requirements, we provide a vocabulary list with Chinese definitions after each lesson in Volumes 1 and 2. The vocabulary list in Volume 2 excludes commonly accessible words. After completing Volumes 1 and 2, students should develop a certain level of self-learning ability. Therefore, Volumes 3 and 4 do not include vocabulary lists.
Notes: Include author biographies, background information, grammar, and linguistic issues that are not easily found in general reference books. Except for the notes in Volume 1, all notes in the other three volumes are in English.
Exercises: In Volumes 1 and 2, some texts are longer, so the exercises are correspondingly increased, with some divided into Groups A and B. Instructors may choose to teach part of the text and assign part of the exercises. Overall, this book includes a variety of exercise types and a substantial workload. Instructors can select exercises as needed or supplement them based on students' requirements.
Supplementary Reading: To enhance students' linguistic intuition and vocabulary, Volumes 1 and 2 include supplementary reading materials for each lesson. We provide only notes and do not include vocabulary lists to gradually cultivate students' ability to use dictionaries.
