Can varicocele be improved without surgery?

Patient's question:

I wasn't feeling well a few weeks ago and went to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor said it was varicocele. I'm very anxious, and I'm also very busy lately and don't want to have surgery. Can varicocele be treated without surgery?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele refers to the tortuous and dilated expansion of veins in the spermatic cord due to impaired venous return. It is a common disease among young and middle-aged adults, characterized by the dilatation, tortuosity, and elongation of the pampiniform plexus (veinary plexus) in the spermatic cord caused by venous stasis. Patients with varicocele who experience only mild discomfort can opt for medication control or scrotal support. If the pain is severe or there are concerns about infertility, surgical ligation at a high position should be performed. The condition of varicocele tends to recur, requiring long-term oral medication.
