What causes a 2-year-old child to cry at night?

Patient's question:

Before this, I was scared by some guests who came to my home a few times because of the noise. Additionally, I was beaten and scolded by my wife twice for reasons such as refusing to wear clothes. I wonder if my child's crying at night is caused by these reasons. How can I make him sleep well?

Doctor's answer:

Night crying refers to a condition where children are normal during the day but cry restlessly at night, or where children cry at fixed times every night, sometimes crying all night long. There are many causes of night crying in children, such as fever, fright, insect bites, mouth ulcers, hunger, and wet diapers, etc. Some of these are normal reactions in children, while others are pathological. For night crying caused by hunger or wet diapers, it should be identified promptly, and the crying will stop after feeding and changing the diaper. Some children also have the habit of sleeping with a night light. When the light is turned off, they cry incessantly, but the crying stops when the light is turned back on. This is an unintended bad habit that develops because parents often work at night and cannot separate the children from sleeping in a different room. The room lighting should be gradually dimmed, allowing children to slowly adapt to the changes in lighting, and finally the light should be turned off.
