What are the dangers of neonatal hypocalcemia?

Patient's question:

Baby's second day of birth, the doctor did a physical examination and said there was neonatal hypocalcemia. What are the hazards of this disease?

Doctor's answer:

If the blood calcium level of a newborn is too low, it is called hypocalcemia. The normal total serum calcium in newborns is 2.25-2.75 millimoles (9-11 millimoles). If the total serum calcium is below 2.0 millimoles or the serum ionized calcium is below 0.9 millimoles, it is classified as early hypocalcemia or late hypocalcemia based on the onset time. Early hypocalcemia occurring within the first 3 days after birth primarily affects premature infants and newborns of diabetic mothers. The reasons for this are insufficient calcium storage, thyroid function suppression, and increased secretion of calcitonin.
