What are the common symptoms of newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

My baby's skin is a bit yellow, I suspect it might be jaundice. What are the common symptoms of jaundice in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

Jaundice typically occurs 2-3 days after birth, peaks between 4-6 days, and gradually subsides after 7-10 days. In premature infants, the duration is longer, and there are no other clinical symptoms except for mild loss of appetite. If jaundice occurs within 24 hours after birth, with a daily increase in serum bilirubin exceeding 5 mg/L or 0.5 mg/L per hour; prolonged duration, in full-term infants; 2 weeks, and in premature infants; 4 weeks still not resolving, even if it deepens again after repeated episodes or if it begins to appear within a week to several weeks after birth, it is considered pathological jaundice.
