Will newborn conjunctivitis heal on its own?

Patient's question:

My baby got conjunctivitis at birth. Will it get better on its own if it's not treated? What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

There are many children suffering from this disease, which is relatively common, but the disease itself does not heal. Massage can be performed under the guidance of a doctor, specifically by pressing the thumb along the root of the nose towards the nasal cavity, massaging the lacrimal sac. Sometimes, this may help the closed residual membrane to pass through, allowing the lacrimal duct to open again. Massage should be performed 3 to 4 times a day. After massage, if necessary, children should be given antibiotic eye drops and oral antibiotics. Some children may have their lacrimal ducts opened and the lacrimal sac inflammation subsided after the above treatment. For children with lacrimal duct obstruction in the lacrimal sac area, lacrimal duct irrigation should be considered.
