Features: The protagonist Jean Valjean, in order to prevent his sister's child from starving, steals a loaf of bread and is sentenced to prison. Upon release, an accidental event leads him to realize his mistakes completely, and he resolves to do good from then on. He changes his name to Madeleine, becomes wealthy through technological improvements at a factory, and later establishes welfare projects in the area, benefiting the community. He is elected as the mayor. A female worker at the factory named Fantine is deceived and gives birth to an illegitimate daughter, Cosette, who is sent to be fostered in the countryside. After Fantine's tragic death, Jean Valjean is relentlessly pursued by the gendarme Javert. During a chaotic battle, Javert is captured and sentenced to death, but Jean Valjean shows mercy and releases him. When the uprising fails, Jean Valjean carries the injured young man, Marius, to safety through the sewers. Unexpectedly, he encounters Javert again. Jean Valjean's years of good deeds put Javert in an extreme moral conflict, and finally, Javert's mind breaks, leading him to commit suicide by drowning. Meanwhile, Jean Valjean helps Cosette and Marius get married, and later, he leaves the world with a sense of peace.
