Patient's question:
My baby was just born, and I want to ask what are the main symptoms of hypocalcemia in newborns? Are there any symptoms to look out for?Doctor's answer:
The main symptoms of neonatal hypocalcemia are that the infant is often irritable and convulsive. The infant has low muscle tone, reduced milk intake, twitching of hands and feet, and generalized convulsions. Occasionally, laryngeal spasm and apnea, accompanied by cyanosis, may lead to sudden death. The infant may occasionally exhibit gastrointestinal symptoms, such as severe vomiting and hematochezia. During episodes, the heart rate may rapidly increase or become cyanotic, with severe laryngeal spasm and apnea. The digestive system may also cause vomiting and hematochezia. Children with intermittent episodes are usually in good condition, but they may have slightly increased muscle tone and hyperactive tendon reflexes.
