Can you exercise with a hernia?

Patient's question:

I have severe ascites. In the past, I often felt a hard lump here in my lower abdomen. Sometimes, even when I gently pressed it with my hand, it still caused some pain. Later, I learned that I had a hernia. I don't like to be active very much, but I don't understand, so please don't take it as me not being able to do activities. Can a hernia be active?

Doctor's answer:

In clinical diagnosis, once a hernia of the abdomen is diagnosed, it is necessary to consider surgical treatment as early as possible. Especially, inguinal direct hernias are prone to cause the herniated contents to become strangulated and suppurate. Therefore, in such cases, strenuous exercise should be avoided because high abdominal pressure can weaken the herniated contents. Once diagnosed, early surgical treatment is a relatively important approach to prevent adverse outcomes from recurring.
