Features: Over the past decade, with the deepening of China's reform and opening-up, socialist democracy and the rule of law have made significant progress. At the same time, the adjudication work of people's courts has also advanced greatly. In addition to criminal and civil trials, economic, administrative, and transportation adjudications have been gradually carried out. Annually, courts across the country handle approximately 3 million first-instance cases of various types. The adjudication procedures have become increasingly refined, and the quality of adjudication work has continuously improved. We believe it is necessary to systematically select and compile court adjudication cases to introduce the practices of Chinese adjudication to domestic and international audiences, showcasing the achievements of China's rule of law construction. At the same time, it also provides valuable reference materials for Chinese judicial workers, legislative workers, as well as teaching and research personnel.
To this end, the National High-Level Judges Training Center① and the Law School of Renmin University of China have jointly collaborated since 1992 to select and compile a comprehensive adjudication case collection annually, including cases adjudicated in the previous year. Each volume is divided into four parts: Criminal Adjudication Cases, Civil Adjudication Cases, Economic Adjudication Cases, and Administrative Adjudication Cases. Due to the limited number of transportation adjudication cases, which are insufficient to form an independent volume, they are categorized and compiled into the Economic and Criminal volumes based on their nature. The title of the book is "Comprehensive Review of Chinese Adjudication Cases."
During the compilation process, we fully respect the actual case facts, adjudication procedures, grounds for judgment, and outcomes, ensuring objectivity and authenticity. To facilitate readers' understanding of the specific adjudication process, we include details such as the adjudicating bodies at each level, litigants, adjudication timelines, the claims and defenses of both parties, the facts ased, the evidence accepted, and the applicable legal provisions. To help readers better understand the reasons for legal application and the relevant legal theories involved, the compilers have written explanations and provided comments on any shortcomings in the judgments. Some editions also include brief legal terminology explanations in appendices.
We present this comprehensive review of adjudication cases to our readers, hoping it will be of assistance and appreciated. This is our first attempt, and it is inevitable that there will be shortcomings. We sincerely welcome valuable feedback from all sectors to help us improve our compilation work, making future editions of the comprehensive review of adjudication cases increasingly perfect.
During the compilation process, we have received support and assistance from leaders and staff of courts at all levels, faculty and students of the Law School of Renmin University of China, and relevant parties. The Ford Foundation and its China office have also provided significant support. We extend our gratitude to all of them.
