Practical Overview of Criminal Facial Analysis for Investigation

Features: In 1993, we pioneered the discipline of forensic facial identification in the field of criminal investigation and published the monograph "Forensic Facial Identification." We initiated specialized teaching of forensic facial identification at the Chinese People's Public Security University. Over the past decade, practical experience has demonstrated the scientific, advanced, and practical nature of forensic facial identification. We have used the fundamental theories of this discipline to train a generation of professional technical talents, filling a gap in criminal investigation education. At the same time, we successfully developed the "Police Star CCK-I-CCK-III Portrait Simulation Combination System" based on the portrait classification code theory in the monograph. This achievement was listed as a key promotion project by the Ministry of Public Security and won the second prize for scientific and technological progress by the Ministry of Public Security as well as an international award. Using this software, over 600 cases have been handled to date, assisting public security organs in solving more than 300 cases. Additionally, it has been successfully applied to facial reconstruction of historical figures such as the princess of the Ming Dynasty and Lady Xinzhui of the Ma Wangdui Han Tomb, contributing to archaeological research. With the changing security landscape and the development of criminal science, we recognize that there are still many aspects in the construction of this discipline that need improvement, refinement, and enhancement. Based on the current needs of teaching and practical application, we spent over two years, preserving the essence of the original work while summarizing new experiences and methods in the field of criminal investigation, collecting extensive new information, and reorganizing and compiling the knowledge of forensic facial identification. This has led to the completion of this new book—An Overview of Forensic Facial Identification for Investigative Practice.
