Features: This book explores the development process of Japan's constitutional system through the study of the interaction between institutions and culture. It attempts to break free from the confines of traditional research models, employing the challenge-response model, methodological individualism, rational choice theory, and political pluralism, among other theories, to explain the complex interplay between constitutional system breakthroughs and traditional cultural changes. Historically, Japan faced two different constitutional system choices and encountered entirely different fates. Neither of these constitutional systems was a native product but rather imports from the West. Once introduced, the new systems faced resistance and constraints from traditional culture, yet at the same time, the systems also impacted and transformed existing culture to some extent. This book attempts to examine the process of interaction and struggle between the two, thereby revealing the general development patterns of constitutional systems and culture.
