Is varicocele considered a disease?

Patient's question:

Male, 21 years old. I want to ask if varicocele is serious? Is surgical treatment absolutely necessary? Thank you

Doctor's answer:

Hello: Varicocele refers to the abnormal dilatation and tortuosity of veins in the spermatic cord due to impaired venous. It occurs 95% of the time on the left side, with bilateral cases being less common. Mild varicocele without symptoms does not require treatment.
Non-surgical treatment: For mild varicocele or cases accompanied by neurasthenia, methods such as reporting scrotal discomfort and applying cold compresses may be used.
Surgical treatment: For moderate to severe varicocele, persistent low sperm count (below 20 million per cubic centimeter for three consecutive times), or testicular atrophy; or when the varicose veins disappear when lying flat, the inguinal high ligation of the spermatic vein can be performed.
