How severe is neonatal hyaline membrane disease?

Patient's question:

This issue of neonatal hyaline membrane disease must be taken seriously. My baby was just born today, and the doctor said her breathing was fast. It was diagnosed as hyaline membrane disease. Is it serious??

Doctor's answer:

Most children are full-term infants. Most of them show accelerated breathing (times per minute) within hours after birth. Most symptoms are mild and last for about 10 hours. Severe symptoms are rare and may occur around 10 days later. The symptoms include low crying, bluish discoloration, mild groaning, nasal flaring, and rapid breathing (exceeding times per minute). Positive pulmonary signs are rarely seen. Auscultation may lead to decreased breath sounds. Coarse and wet rales with slightly reduced PaO. In some cases, vomiting, elevated PaCO, and acidosis are not common. Children also cry and can suck milk.
