Patient's question:
What should I do if the semen does not liquefy? Will it affect a man's fertility? Additionally, I would like to ask which treatment method is best for treating non-liquefying semen.Doctor's answer:
Under normal circumstances, sperm liquefies within 30 minutes after ejaculation. If it takes longer than 30 minutes, it is considered prolonged liquefaction; if it takes longer than 60 minutes, it is considered non-liquefiable. Prolonged liquefaction can reduce the chances of pregnancy, while non-liquefaction may lead to infertility. The coagulation of semen is caused by coagulation proteins produced by the seminal vesicles. On the other hand, liquefaction is the result of a series of proteolytic enzymes, known as liquefaction factors, secreted by the prostate. Therefore, if the prostate and seminal vesicles suffer recurrent inflammation, disrupting their secretory functions, it can either enhance the coagulation factors or increase the liquefaction factors, leading to prolonged liquefaction time of semen.
