How to diagnose and treat varicocele

Patient's question:

I am a taxi driver and have been sitting in a small space for a long time, lacking in movement. Recently, I noticed some pain in my testicles, and they seem to be of uneven height. Looking at the symptoms, I did some research and suspect it might be varicocele. I would like to ask: How is varicocele diagnosed and treated?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele can lead to male infertility through various different pathways. It not only interferes with the regeneration of sperm but also causes a decline in sperm motility. Therefore, patients with severe varicocele still need to consider active treatment. For mild varicocele or those accompanied by neurasthenia, measures such as reporting scrotal swelling and applying cold compresses may be recommended. For more severe varicocele, patients with a sperm count consistently below 20 million three times in a row, or those with testicular atrophy; if the varicose veins disappear when lying flat, the varicocelectomy procedure, specifically high ligation of the internal spermatic vein, can be performed.
