Part File System, consisting of four chapters, introduces the complete abstract data structures of UNIX files, file systems, and system buffers, as well as the operations on these abstract data structures, including file system calls. Part Storage Management, consisting of four chapters, introduces the hardware foundation of storage management, system space, process space, and the management of physical memory. Part Process Management, consisting of five chapters, introduces the structure and states of processes, the creation, execution, and termination of processes, process scheduling, the handling of interrupts and exceptions, and process communication. Part Input/Output Subsystem, consisting of four chapters, introduces the interface between processes and the input/output subsystem, the general structure of device drivers, and the management of block and character devices, including the management of console terminals. Part Others, including an overview of the system initialization process, system generation, and assembly code in the core code. Each chapter of the book is accompanied by source code from UNIX System V. The source code, except for long lines split into two, retains the original style entirely, and the sum of these source codes constitutes the basic part of the UNIX system core. The sixth part is Appendices. Appendix A includes all the .h files related to the core code. Appendix B is a function index compiled for the convenience of readers reading the source code, including the name of each function, the file name it is located in, and the chapter of the file. This book can be used as a textbook or teaching reference for senior undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, or as a reference book for researchers and developers engaged in UNIX system research and application.
