Can newborn jaundice be treated without hospitalization?

Patient's question:

My child was born two weeks early. When discharged, the record showed slightly yellow. At six days, the measurement was 11.9. At twenty-five days, the measurement was 13.8. I want to know if my child is serious? Does he need to be hospitalized?

Doctor's answer:

Jaundice can be divided into physiological jaundice. It occurs 2 to 3 days after birth. The peak appears on days 4 to 6. It subsides within 7 to 10 days. In premature infants, the duration is longer. Except for mild anorexia, there are no other clinical symptoms. If jaundice occurs within 24 hours after birth and does not subside within 2 to 3 weeks, or if it recurs or worsens for several weeks after birth, it is pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice is recommended to start breastfeeding early. Pathological jaundice should be treated with hospital phototherapy or traditional Chinese medicine.
