Does acute orchitis cause prostatitis?

Patient's question:

The current symptoms are swelling and pain in the testicles, making it difficult to walk. Currently, I am lying at home. Previous tests indicated epididymitis. Can acute epididymitis trigger prostatitis?

Doctor's answer:

Epididymitis is a common disease among male reproductive organs, more prevalent in middle-aged and young adults. Since the pathogenic bacteria are gram-negative bacilli and gram-positive cocci, it is also known as non-specific epididymitis. The causative organisms rarely enter through the bloodstream and lymphatic system; it is often secondary to prostatitis, seminal vesiculitis, and urethritis. The inflammation is usually unilateral. It needs to be differentiated from epididymal tuberculosis and filariasis. The former involves localized inflammation in the tail of the epididymis in the early stage, loss of the boundary between the epididymis and testis in the later stage, adhesion of the skin to the epididymis, and even the recurrence of sinuses. The latter is characterized by thickening of the scrotal skin, and microfilariae can be detected in blood samples taken at night.
