What are the hazards of neonatal jaundice?

Patient's question:

After the baby is born, the eyes are slightly yellow. A couple of days later, the face also turns yellow. It gets more severe day by day. Now it has been over 50 days, and the face is still a little yellow, not as severe as it was before the full moon. What are the dangers of high jaundice in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn jaundice appears pale yellow. It is limited to the face and neck or spreads to the trunk. The sclera appears yellow. It resolves after 2 to 3 days. The skin color returns to normal after 5 to 6 days. In severe cases, jaundice can spread from head to toe, affecting the entire body. The vomit and cerebrospinal fluid may also remain yellow-stained for more than 7 days. In severely jaundiced infants, indirect bilirubin in the blood can enter the brain tissue, causing brain damage, known as bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus. Some severely ill fetuses may die as a result.
