1. About This Book
SQL Server 2000 is a network database management system released by Microsoft. Its main task is to store, manage, and provide data to meet the needs of client connections and data storage. SQL Server 2000 has the following main features:
(1) A true client/server architecture.
(2) A graphical user interface, making system management more intuitive and simple.
(3) Rich programming interface tools, providing users with greater flexibility in program design.
(4) Seamless integration with Windows NT, a multithreaded architecture design that improves the system's response speed to multiple user simultaneous access.
(5) Support for Web technologies, allowing users to easily send data from the database to web pages.
This book covers the application and development of various functions of Microsoft SQL Server.
2. Book Structure
This book is divided into 12 chapters, with the following content structure:
Chapter 1: Introduction to SQL Server 2000
This chapter introduces the concepts, language features, new functions, and management tools of SQL Server 2000.
Chapter 2: Basic Knowledge of SQL Server 2000
This chapter covers the installation of SQL Server 2000, database creation, modification, deletion, compression, and backup/restore of databases.
Chapter 3: Student Management System
This chapter introduces system function design, database design, data table operations, and data table queries.
Chapter 4: ODBC and SQL Server 2000 Connection
This chapter covers starting the ODBC Data Source Administrator, the components of the ODBC Data Source Administrator, and adding DSNs.
Chapter 5: Design of Warehouse Management System
This example uses Visual C++ and SQL Server to construct a warehouse management system. In this example, Visual C++ is demonstrated in database applications through specific and vivid examples and concise language. The powerful MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class, i.e., Microsoft Foundation Library) in Visual C++ is used in this example, and it also demonstrates how to generate a project and use various controls in MFC.
Chapter 6: Design of Sales System
This chapter continues to introduce how to use Visual C++ to implement SQL Server applications, from requirements analysis to program implementation, and demonstrates how to build a sales system modeled after a supermarket, from the overall to the specific. This chapter not only implements the use of Visual C++ in databases but also utilizes many controls of Visual C++.
Chapter 7: Book Management System
This chapter uses the development tool PowerBuilder 8.0 in conjunction with the SQL Server 2000 database. It first introduces the concept of PowerBuilder 8.0, then explains how to implement database connections, create libraries, applications, and windows in the PowerBuilder 8.0 development environment, along with some representative and basic development examples.
Chapter 8: Catering Management System
This chapter provides an in-depth introduction to the database and the use of the development tool PowerBuilder 8.0, familiarizing readers with advanced applications of SQL Server 2000. It involves concepts such as classes, functions, and triggers in PowerBuilder 8.0.
Chapter 9: Human Resource Management System Development with Delphi
This chapter details how to use the controls provided by Delphi for database operations, demonstrating how to perform SQL operations using the Query component. SQL is a powerful database operation language capable of completing queries, insertions, deletions, and modifications. The Query component can conveniently load SQL statements. This example provides a detailed introduction to the use of various database components and their applications.
Chapter 10: Attendance System Design
In this example, in addition to further introducing database operations, it also introduces many controls, such as the PageControl control, combobox, listcontrol, DateTimePicker, and other commonly used controls.
Chapter 11: Student Information Management System
This chapter uses the development tool Visual Basic 6.0 in conjunction with the SQL Server 2000 database. Through this chapter, readers can further understand database design and the design of VB database applications, becoming familiar with advanced applications of SQL Server 2000, such as stored procedures.
Chapter 12: Hotel Room Information Management System
This chapter introduces an information management system developed using Visual Basic based on SQL Server 2000. It uses wizards to generate application frameworks, improving development efficiency and shortening development cycles. This chapter also adopts a database design method primarily based on stored procedures but handles more data tables and more complex transaction logic, hoping to enhance readers' business analysis, database design, and application design skills.
3. Book Features
The main feature of this book is to introduce the various functions of SQL Server 2000, providing detailed explanations of SQL Server 2000 and development examples using various development tools (including Visual C++, PowerBuilder 8.0, Delphi, and Visual Basic). This includes detailed requirements analysis, database design, and application design. The language is concise, the logic is clear, and the concepts are accurate, allowing readers to quickly master the application and development of SQL Server 2000. Through this book, readers can also gain a preliminary understanding of several currently popular development tools and their similarities and differences when developing databases for SQL Server 2000, as well as the basic process of developing database applications.
4. Target Audience
This book is an excellent tutorial for those learning the application and development of SQL Server 2000. It can serve as a reference manual for database developers and also as a textbook for computer-related majors in higher education institutions. Due to the authors' limited expertise and the haste in writing, there may be errors and omissions in the book. We sincerely invite relevant experts and readers to point them out.
