Patient's question:
My child was just born. This child has recently developed jaundice. The doctor has required treatment and observation. I am very worried, so I would like to consult. Is neonatal jaundice a disease that every baby must get?Doctor's answer:
Neonatal jaundice includes two types:1. Physiological jaundice:
- Relatively high production of bilirubin.
- Insufficient uptake of bilirubin by hepatocytes.
- Insufficient ability to excrete bilirubin.
- This is unrelated to it.
- It can return to normal.
2. Pathological jaundice:
- Excessive production of bilirubin.
- Disruption in hepatobiliary bilirubin metabolism.
- Disruption in bile excretion.
- Hemolytic diseases.
- Requires treatment.
- Includes congenital liver diseases, or biliary obstruction, or changes caused by hemolytic diseases.
- All of these need timely treatment to control the stability of the condition.
