Does a 29-week premature infant have anemia and low blood oxygen?

Patient's question:

My baby was born a month ago. The baby is quite active. Recently, I've noticed that the baby hasn't moved much and looks lethargic. Their breathing is also a bit difficult. I took them to the hospital for a check-up, and the doctor said it's anemia. I'm wondering if anemia in premature infants can lead to hypoxia?

Doctor's answer:

Mild anemia. You can consume more foods such as red beans, jujubes, pig liver, and blood pudding as supplements to correct anemia. If the anemia is more than moderate, further tests are needed to determine the type of anemia. Most cases are caused by iron deficiency anemia. Subsulfate iron tablets or ferrous sulfate tablets can be used for treatment. Regular blood tests are required during treatment. Severe anemia can affect blood oxygen levels. If a baby is oxygen-deprived, symptoms such as difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, muscle weakness, and fatigue may occur.
