What is a hernia?

Patient's question:

I used to be in great health, and I would occasionally get colds or coughs during seasonal changes, but nothing serious. Recently, I noticed some things sticking out on my body, which scared me. I went to the hospital for a thorough check-up and was told I had a hernia. What is a hernia?

Doctor's answer:

Hernia refers to the weakness of the abdominal wall or other areas, causing the intestines to weaken, such as in the umbilicus or inguinal region. After diagnosis, the likelihood of spontaneous healing is usually low, and surgical high ligation or laparoscopic treatment is typically required. Intense exercise or other stimuli can easily lead to the risk of hernia strangulation or intestinal necrosis. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities. If symptoms of a cold are prominent, coughing relief may lead to a decrease in abdominal pressure, making the weakness more pronounced.
