What causes pediatric hernia?

Patient's question:

My child is now six months old. They are usually very fussy. The left side of the scrotum looks slightly larger than the right side these past two days. The doctor said it's a small hernia that has dropped down. If it doesn't ascend by the age of two, surgery can be done to repair it. What can trigger pediatric hernia?

Doctor's answer:

Based on the described situation, this may be related to inguinal hernia in children, which is often caused by the failure of the processus vaginalis to close during the descent of the testis in the embryonic period. It can develop in the neonatal period and is a congenital disease. For children with a history of a mass in the inguinal area or those who temporarily cannot be found with a mass in the inguinal area, infants and young children can be stimulated to cry or have pressure applied to their abdomen, while older children can be asked to cough, hold their breath, or perform abdominal distension and running/jumping before reexamination, which can often reveal the mass and confirm the diagnosis.
