What causes pediatric inguinal hernia?

Patient's question:

A few days ago, I went to my colleague's house for a visit. Their baby is now 5 months old and is incredibly cute and adorable. However, a few days ago, it was said that the baby just developed an inguinal hernia. I'd like to know what causes pediatric hernias?

Doctor's answer:

Children suffering from chronic cough, constipation, and prolonged intense crying can lead to abnormally elevated intra-abdominal pressure, pushing organs into the inguinal canal, resulting in hernia. The weakness of the inguinal muscles and fascia, along with insufficient barrier strength, makes it easy for abdominal organs to enter the canal, causing sudden hernia. Hernia cannot heal on its own. Surgery is the only treatment method. Because the greatest risk of hernia is incarceration, and the consequences of incarceration are more severe, hernia patients should be treated as soon as possible. Infants should undergo hernia surgery around six months of age.
