What are the causes of neonatal hypocalcemia?

Patient's question:

My son is a premature baby. Now he always has trouble sleeping at night, lacks energy, is restless, and has convulsions or seizures in his hands and feet. He always cries, and no matter how we try to comfort him, it doesn't help. We took him to a nearby hospital for a check-up, and the local doctor said a lot, but only knew it was hypocalcemia. What factors can cause hypocalcemia in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

If fetal calcium storage is insufficient or excessive phosphorus intake occurs after birth, it can both cause hypocalcemia. Early hypocalcemia occurs within the first 2 days after birth. It is often caused by temporary hypoparathyroidism. Newborns with low birth weight, those who suffer from asphyxia, and those with respiratory distress syndrome have poorer parathyroid function compared to full-term normal newborns. They also have lower calcium storage and a higher incidence rate. It is recommended to visit a better local hospital.
