Features: This book introduces the practice and application of operating systems. The target audience is computer users (rather than designers) of operating systems and networks. Only basic computer concepts are required from readers, without the need for advanced mathematical knowledge or programming experience. Compared to previous versions, the new edition has been revised in terms of text and content, and has added considerable new material, such as: Windows 2000, Intel Pentium processor architecture, C/S network architecture, Novell Netware, Internet, UNIX/Linux, etc. Therefore, the entire book is more comprehensive and practical. The book is divided into five parts:
I. Reviewing basic computer concepts to fill in gaps;
II. Introducing the fundamental concepts of operating systems;
III. Communication between users and programmers and the operating system, primarily discussing user interfaces, command languages or job control languages, with specific examples of various operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 2000, UNIX/Linux, and IBM's MVS/JCL;
IV. Further discussing the aforementioned operating systems in conjunction with machine internals;
V. Discussing networks, network operating systems, including C/S network operating systems, Novell Netware, Windows 2000 servers, and the Internet.
