Patient's question:
My son is 75 days old. His fontanelle doesn't sink in as noticeably as other children's—it looks flat, but you can feel a slight depression when you touch it. I'm worried that his fontanelle might be closing too early. Please help me get an answer from the doctor. Thank you very much.Doctor's answer:
The child's head circumference is basically normal. However, the anterior fontanelle is significantly smaller. A head CT scan is needed to rule out brain developmental abnormalities. Additionally, is early closure of the anterior fontanelle related to excessive supplementation of vitamins and trace elements? The fontanelle closure is a window reflecting brain development. If it closes before 6 months, it may indicate microcephaly or incomplete brain development. If it remains unclosed after 18 months, it is considered too late. Such children may have hydrocephalus, rickets, or cretinism; a bulging fontanelle indicates increased intracranial pressure.
