Features: Why is picture editing necessary? In communication studies, there is a concept called the "gatekeeper." The gatekeeper "selects, decides what to include or exclude, determines which information or aspects to highlight or cut, decides what information to provide to the audience, and creates a certain impression through this information." Picture editors are the "gatekeepers" of media using images. They select photos, they reprocess images, and they decide how the images will ultimately appear on the page. The prominent position of picture editors in image dissemination often leads to conflicts between them and photographers.
