Features: This series of teaching materials is guided by the guiding principles of the 2003 National College English Teaching Requirements issued by the Ministry of Education, focusing on the reform of college English teaching across the country. It emphasizes English language knowledge, applied skills, learning strategies, and cross-cultural communication. The materials segmentally train students' strong listening and speaking abilities, as well as their comprehensive application skills in reading, writing, translation, and professional English. This series adheres to the principles of classified guidance and teaching according to aptitude, while integrating various language skills into a unified difficulty level. Each unit is organized around a central theme, with overlapping language content in the skill training, achieving an organic combination of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. This promotes the formation and consolidation of students' comprehensive English skills.
Basic Design Principles of the Book:
Theme-based Recurrence Principle: The theme of the text serves as the core for organizing unit-based learning. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation materials are coordinated under the same theme, with recurring theme vocabulary and language expressions. Special emphasis is placed on reinforcing memory and retention, fostering long-term memory, and cultivating students' comprehensive application skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.
Lead-in and Authenticity Principle for Listening and Speaking Training: Listening and speaking activities are prioritized, with authentic dialogues compiled for university students in English-speaking countries, tailored to each unit's theme. These dialogues are natural and idiomatic, providing strong interest and relevance for Chinese university students' listening and speaking training. The listening and speaking materials are closely related to the main text, implementing the theme-based recurrence principle.
Autonomous Practice Design Principle: The design focuses on the diversity of students' autonomous processing of language information, incorporating subjective question types that encourage students to generate their own language expressions. The teacher's reference book includes reference lesson plans and teaching suggestions for each unit, along with as many detailed reference materials as possible.
Cognitive Selection Principle for Student Materials: The selection of materials fully considers the development of students' cognitive levels and learning psychology, with themes closely aligned with their life experiences and thinking abilities. The materials possess cultural influence and intellectual depth. Emphasis is placed on the timeliness, novelty, and interest of the content, as well as the diversity and accuracy of language forms. The systematicity and coherence of themes across units and sub-books are also prioritized.
The difficulty progression standard of material selection aligns with the current national College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 level requirements, as well as the upcoming reforms to strengthen listening and speaking tests in future Band 4 and Band 6 exams.
