(21st Century College English: Listening and Speaking Coursebook) is one of the core textbooks for the "Nineth Five-Year Plan" national key textbooks in general higher education (21st Century College English). It is closely coordinated with (21st Century College English: Reading and Writing Coursebook) and is based on the themes of the main texts (texts) in the Reading and Writing Coursebook. It makes full use of the existing language materials in the texts, with listening and speaking training as the center. Through listening and speaking training, it not only helps students digest the content learned from the Reading and Writing Coursebook but also focuses on training listening and speaking skills, especially speaking skills, from easy to difficult. This enables students to improve their reading and writing skills while also enhancing their listening and speaking skills, thereby meeting the requirements of the (College English Teaching Syllabus (Revised Edition)) for both reading and listening/speaking/writing at two levels. The Listening and Speaking Coursebook focuses on discussing and retelling the content of the main texts in the Reading and Writing Coursebook as its core, with functional-notional training required by the syllabus running through it. It adopts a combination of listening and speaking, speaking and reading/writing, and in-class (with speaking as the focus) and out-of-class (with listening as the focus) approaches. The training requirements are specific and clear, and it provides necessary examples and prompts, making it convenient for teachers to operate in the classroom and enabling students to feel inspired with appropriate guidance. The book covers a wide range of topics and genres, with content progressing from simple to complex, and the language is easy to learn. The training methods are diverse and have different focuses. The Listening and Speaking Coursebook series is divided into four volumes, with each volume containing 10 units.
Units 1-2 are for the basic level, requiring students to understand short dialogues, humorous stories, and passages in different contexts, with a focus on training retelling, question-and-answer, and dialogue skills. Units 3-4 are for the advanced level, shifting to topic-centered training, where students engage in discussions, debates, reviews, and short speeches after understanding all language materials. The difficulty and length of listening and speaking materials increase, while prompts are reduced to give students more room for creativity. This book is the fourth volume of the Listening and Speaking Coursebook, with each unit divided into four parts.
Part 1 checks, answers questions, or reviews the key points of the listening, speaking, and writing exercises assigned for the previous lesson. Part 2 focuses on retelling and discussing the content of text A from the Reading and Writing Coursebook. Part 3 is for listening and speaking training, including dialogue exercises, functional-notional exercises, short speeches, and short written summaries. Part 4 consists of out-of-class exercises, mainly dialogue recording assignments, written assignments, and listening training.
The fourth volume of the Listening and Speaking Coursebook is edited by Chen Yongjie, with contributions from Zheng Shutang, Ye Juxian, Tao Qing, Xia Ganlin, and others in writing, reviewing, and revising. This coursebook is specially recorded by foreign experts.
