Features: This book is a research outcome of the Ministry of Education's "Reform Plan for Teaching Content and Curriculum Systems in Higher Education Towards the 21st Century," serving as a textbook for the 21st century curriculum and the "Nineth Five-Year Plan" physics textbook for science education under the Ministry of Education. It is also a national key textbook for general higher education under the "Nineth Five-Year Plan." To adapt to the rapid development of the optical discipline since the invention of lasers in the 1960s, the book introduces the fundamental physical content of modern optical topics while elaborating on classical optics. The book is divided into two parts, totaling 10 chapters.
Part I focuses on classical optics, covering 6 chapters including: Electromagnetic Waves and the Speed of Light, Geometrical Optics, Superposition of Light Waves I and II, Coherence of Light, Transverse Nature of Light, and Fundamentals of Crystal Optics. This part provides an in-depth yet accessible discussion of light propagation, introducing the time variable to integrate temporal and spatial domains of optics, thereby facilitating the explanation of related new topics and concepts in modern optics.
Part II discusses the interaction of light with matter and briefly introduces the fundamentals of modern photonics, covering 4 chapters including: Dispersion, Absorption, and Scattering of Light, Electro-Optic and Magneto-Optic Effects, Lasers, and an Introduction to Modern Photonics. This part primarily addresses the fundamental physical principles of several hot topics in modern optics, such as the principles of lasers, second-harmonic generation, optical mixing, optical phase conjugation, optical bistability, and optical computers.
The book intersperses several thought-provoking questions and extracurricular small experiments to encourage readers to think actively, engage in hands-on practice, and explore independently. This book can serve as a textbook or teaching reference for physics majors in higher education institutions and is also available for reference by relevant science and technology professionals.
