Features: This book starts with basic network knowledge and comprehensively explains how to develop pure text MUD games. Through the construction of SimpleMUD and BetterMUD, it focuses on how to implement MUD. This book is part of the classic series on game development and is suitable for game developers, amateur game software development enthusiasts, and can also serve as a reference for relevant majors in colleges and universities. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 introduces basic knowledge of computer networks, Winsock/Berkeley Sockets API, and multithreading concepts; it also showcases all the classes and functions of the BasicLib library used in this book, creates a socket library SocketLib, introduces the most commonly used Telnet protocol in MUD, and builds a simple Telnet-based chat server SimpleChat. Part 2 provides a detailed introduction to how to create SimpleMUD. This is a very simple MUD, but through it, every concept of MUD programming is explained until every problem encountered in developing such a game is resolved. In SimpleMUD, both the physical and logical layers of the game are written entirely in C code. Part 3 describes how to create BetterMUD, which is a highly flexible MUD and much more complex than SimpleMUD. It includes all the main features of modern MUD games in BetterMUD. In BetterMUD, the flexible logical layer is built using the Python scripting language. Part 4 appendix is included on the accompanying CD-ROM and contains all the auxiliary information that may need to be understood. This includes compiler settings, socket error codes, basic C knowledge, and template basic knowledge, as well as the terminology used in this book. This book is part of the classic series on game development and is suitable for game developers, amateur game software development enthusiasts, and can also serve as a reference for relevant majors in colleges and universities.
