Introduction: Qi Baishi is one of the most important art masters of the 20th century in China. To showcase Qi Baishi's art and life journey, various types of Qi Baishi art books, monographs, and biographies have been published in our country. However, among all these publications, the art books of Qi Baishi with value for appreciation, study, research, and collection are separated from the research works and biographies that explore his artistic characteristics and life experiences. Due to this reason, we have planned and published this large-scale art book, Modern Masters and Artistic Lives—Qi Baishi, with the primary goal of adhering to the ancient principle of "understanding a person by their times and circumstances." It aims to interpret, analyze, and present the famous works of this art master from different historical periods in the context of his life, thereby addressing the shortcomings and gaps in existing publications about Qi Baishi.
To comprehensively and accurately illustrate the interactive relationship between Qi Baishi's masterpieces and his life experiences, we have invited Mr. Lang Shaojun, a renowned contemporary Chinese art historian and critic, as well as an expert in Qi Baishi's art, to write the Biography of Qi Baishi for this art book. Additionally, Dr. Zou Yuejin, the editor-in-chief of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the head of the Art History Department, has further interviewed Mr. Lang Shaojun based on the Biography of Qi Baishi, discussing the relationship between Qi Baishi's representative works from different artistic periods and his life experiences. This allows readers to understand and appreciate the charm of Qi Baishi's art through engaging conversations.
The book includes nearly 100 life photos of Qi Baishi from different periods and over 400 of his famous paintings. Printed on 157g imported art paper in four colors, the images in the art book are clear and lifelike. It is published by Hunan Fine Arts Publishing House, which also published the Complete Works of Qi Baishi.
Another outstanding feature of this art book is its division of Qi Baishi's artistic life into four periods, with carefully selected representative works from each period compiled into separate volumes.
