What should I do if my baby talks a lot?

Patient's question:

My baby always talks endlessly when she calls alone, as if she has a lot to say. She is now 1.5 years old and has just started to learn a little bit of speech. Additionally, whenever she hears singing, she jumps non-stop and very high. I was wondering if this is normal. Is it a sign of development or just hyperactivity?

Doctor's answer:

Children who talk a lot are usually likable, but sometimes their endless chatter can also be annoying to you. You can't help but think of some talkative adults you don't particularly like in your life, and you worry that your child might develop into the kind of person you don't want them to be. Encourage their other interests and choose activities that you can do with them. These activities should encourage them to use their energy and actions, such as hiking, biking, playing games on the playground, or board games. These games can attract their attention and reduce the amount they talk.
