This book is compiled according to the new PETS exam (syllabus) issued by the Ministry of Education. Each entry generally consists of the following parts: word form, phonetic transcription, part of speech, inflectional forms of the word, definition, memory techniques, typical example sentences, key points, vocabulary expansion, and classic exam questions.
(1) Word Form: Words and phrases specified in the PETS exam vocabulary list.
(2) Phonetic Transcription: The pronunciation of the word form is indicated using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) after the word. If a word has different pronunciations due to its part of speech, both pronunciations are placed in brackets and separated by a semicolon. Generally, one pronunciation is marked for each word form; less common variant pronunciations are also provided when frequently used, separated by a semicolon.
(3) Part of Speech: The part of speech is indicated in italic English abbreviations. If a word form has multiple parts of speech, they are listed in order of common usage.
(4) Inflectional Forms of the Word: This refers to irregular forms of verbs (e.g., tenses), irregular plural forms of nouns, and irregular comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs. For the convenience of candidates, we have systematically organized and compiled irregular verb forms and irregular plural noun forms in the form of appendices in the book.
