Patient's question:
I have had varicocele for many years. Actually, it hasn't caused much discomfort, and since I already have children, I haven't paid much attention to it. However, in recent times, the pain has been getting worse, sometimes even keeping me awake at night. It has seriously affected my normal life and work, and I am very troubled. Could you please advise on how to diagnose varicocele to improve the condition?Doctor's answer:
Varicocele is classified into three degrees. In mild cases, the dilated veins are not palpable locally, and only discomfort is felt. In moderate cases, the dilated veins can be palpated when standing, but they are not visible externally. In severe cases, dilated veins in the scrotum appear like worms or clusters. The treatment of varicocele varies by degree. Mild cases can be managed conservatively, including rest, wearing tight underwear, increasing physical activity, and appropriately using blood-activating medications. However, moderate to severe cases, or those accompanied by infertility or abnormal semen, require surgery. This is because varicocele obstructs blood, leading to circulatory disorders in the testes, impairing their normal sperm production and excretion functions. Over time, this can cause testicular swelling and loss of all functions.
