Patient's question:
When I was taking a shower, I noticed that my testicles were of uneven size, and one seemed to be lower than the other. When I touched it, the veins appeared to be particularly prominent, almost like earthworms coiled inside the testicle. Please ask: If I have varicocele, what is the best way to treat it?Doctor's answer:
Varicocele is a common disease in young and middle-aged men. It is a pathological phenomenon where the pampiniform plexus of the spermatic cord becomes dilated, tortuous, and elongated due to various reasons leading to poor drainage. It most commonly occurs on the left side, but can also occur on the right or both sides. In clinical diagnosis, many patients with varicocele are found to have oligospermia, azoospermia, or impaired fertility. For more severe varicocele, where sperm tests consistently show less than 20 million sperm per milliliter for three consecutive times, or where testicular atrophy is present, or where the varicose veins disappear when lying down, it is recommended to undergo high ligation of the spermatic vein. The condition of varicocele is prone to recurrence, requiring long-term medication for maintenance.
