Qi Baishi is one of the most legendary painters in the world of Chinese painting. As one of the world's top ten cultural figures, he was born on January 1, 1864, in Xingziwo, Xiangtan, Hunan. A copy of the Jieziyuan Huapu (A Manual of Painting in the Jieziyuan Style) inspired Qi Baishi's passion for painting. With his meticulous copying of the images in the manual, he greatly improved the traditional and repetitive wood-carving techniques he had been following. Qi Baishi was deeply influenced by Chen Shizeng in painting, while also absorbing the strengths of Wu Changshuo. He specialized in flowers and birds, with bold and vigorous brushwork, strong and sharp lines, and meticulous attention to detail in his insect paintings, which were exceptionally fine. He excelled at painting shrimp, crabs, cicadas, butterflies, fish, and birds, with ink that flowed like water, brimming with the vitality of nature. His landscape compositions were unconventional and highly creative, while his seal carving and calligraphy were unique and outstanding. He was an outstanding artist on the modern Chinese painting scene.
