A dictionary is an important tool for learning English. Although we use various English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries to study English, the sentences we learn are not the ones frequently used by Americans. Many sentences in dictionaries are grammatically correct, but Americans may not understand their meaning (surprising, isn’t it?). I’ve often been asked whether I could write a practical English dictionary for contemporary Americans to use in everyday conversations. Many people have also suggested publishing a dictionary with short sentences for easy conversational exchange. Inspired by these voices, I decided to compile this book. For many years, I served as a lecturer for NHK TV’s "Pocket English Conversation—Learn and Use in One Sentence" program. It was a very popular program. This book was planned and written from the same perspective as the program’s teaching materials. In other words, this dictionary collects conversational expressions currently used by Americans with clear meanings. New words and expressions appear in the U.S. almost every day. While this is also true for Chinese, the changes in English conversational expressions are particularly significant. This book focuses on "modern American expressions frequently used today" and selects various spoken short sentences. Multiple American speakers have carefully confirmed each sentence, and professors from the University of California, Irvine, also participated in this confirmation. As mentioned earlier, many dictionaries list uncommon and obscure example sentences. However, this dictionary primarily includes simple and common basic expressions, allowing readers to effectively learn truly practical English expressions. We believe this is a dictionary unlike any other, covering the most vivid expressions currently used in the U.S. Whether for travel, study abroad, business trips, communication with Americans, or correspondence with friends and family, we hope it will be an indispensable helper in all aspects.
