Why do newborns always need to breastfeed?

Patient's question:

Newborn at day seventeen, always wanting to eat milk. Usually, after just having one feeding and being put to bed, they start humming and wanting to eat again? Also, now they can only sleep when held; if put to bed for a while, they wake up again, start humming and want to eat milk. After feeding them a couple of mouthfuls in the arms, they fall asleep again, but when put back to bed, they start humming again!

Doctor's answer:

Hello! The baby keeps wanting to breastfeed. When put to bed for a while, they wake up again asking for milk. The baby doesn't sleep for long periods—does it mean the mother's milk isn't enough for the baby? Newborns usually sleep for about 18 to 20 hours a day when well-fed. If the baby finishes feeding, you can try giving them some formula to see if they continue to eat. The mother should drink more milk-boosting soups, such as pig trotter soup or crucian carp soup.
