Features: The American Law Institute, an outstanding group composed of legal scholars, judges, and legal practitioners, has been compiling various "restatements" for many years. These restatements are comprehensive and authoritative summaries or distillations of American law. These summaries are particularly valuable in common law areas such as torts, contracts, and property—where legal rules are scattered across thousands of judicial decisions, making them difficult to find and master. The restatements of the American Law Institute have, therefore, had a significant impact on the development of American law, as reflected in the extensive citations of these restatements in judicial opinions. Once translated into Chinese, these restatements will provide Chinese law students, scholars, judges, and practitioners with an accurate and efficient guide to American law.
—Richard A. Posner, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1993–2000), Judge (1981–1993; 2000–present), and Professor at the University of Chicago Law School
The restatements of the American Law Institute are the result of long-term and serious collaboration by many talented American scholars and practitioners in various legal fields. Chinese legal reformers seeking the wisdom of other legal systems should feel fortunate that these academically rigorous and influential books have now begun to be translated into Chinese. No one should claim that American experience and solutions must necessarily apply to China's unique political-legal culture and issues. However, if one function of comparative law is to broaden horizons and inspire thought, these new translations should be widely appreciated by our Chinese colleagues.
