Is the harm of benign prostatic hyperplasia great or not?

Patient's question:

These days, I don't know what's wrong, but I always feel a strong urge to urinate. However, when I go to the toilet, it feels like there isn't much urine. Sometimes, it's just a drop or two. During morning urination, I even noticed that my urine was split. After consulting, I found out it might be benign prostatic hyperplasia. I'd like to ask: Is the harm of benign prostatic hyperplasia significant?

Doctor's answer:

1. Mild hyperplasia does not require treatment.
2. Estrogen therapy: Take ethinyl estradiol orally, 1 to 3 milligrams at a time, three times a day, for 1 to 3 weeks. For acute urinary retention or more severe difficulty urinating, the initial dosage can be slightly higher, or use estradiol valerate 10 milligrams for intramuscular injection, once every 5 to 7 days.
3. During acute urinary retention, acupuncture can be performed on points such as Guanyuan, Qihai, Sanyinjiao, and Yanglingquan. Catheterization should be used to eliminate urinary retention, and the catheter should be retained to gradually empty the bladder.
4. Surgical treatment: If the prostate hyperplasia is significant, there have been multiple episodes of acute urinary retention, a large amount of residual urine (60 to 100 milliliters or more), urinary tract infection, impaired renal function, and the condition does not improve with the aforementioned treatments, a prostatectomy should be considered.
